Fringed Gentian

[Fringed Gentian]

Desktop wallpaper

Fringed Gentian, photographed near the Trans-Canada Trail in Stittsville. This beautiful wildflower favors alvar and prairie-like habitat, and doesn't deal well with shade from trees nor competition from other plants. These were growing by themselves up against a hillside near a limestone quarry. I waited for the sun to crest the hill and strike them before I took the picture.
